Patching, Crack Filling & Driveway Repair
Most South Shore driveways do not need to be torn out and replaced — they need a few problem areas dealt with before those problems turn into a much bigger job. Potholes, cracks, sunken spots, and crumbling edges are all fixable when you catch them early.
Evano Asphalt Services handles repair work for homeowners and small commercial lots across the South Shore. We will tell you straight whether a repair will hold or whether the base is too far gone and a section needs to be replaced.
- Pothole patching and surface patching
- Hot and cold crack filling
- Driveway edge and apron repair
- Spot overlays and partial resurfacing
When Repair Is — and Is Not — the Right Call
Asphalt should be repaired when the base underneath is still solid and the damage is limited to cracks, potholes, sunken spots, or worn edges. It should be replaced when the base has failed, the surface shows widespread alligator cracking across most of the driveway, or the same areas have been patched repeatedly. Patching a failed base wastes money — the new patch fails the same way the old surface did.
- Repair makes sense: a few potholes, scattered cracks, edge damage, isolated sunken spots, a solid driveway that just has rough patches.
- Repair plus sealcoat: a driveway with crack filling and patching needs, followed by a fresh sealcoat to protect the rest of the surface.
- Full replacement is the better call: alligator cracking across most of the surface, multiple deep sunken areas, or a driveway that has already been patched repeatedly. At that point, repair is throwing good money after bad.
We will give you a straight read when we come out — if a repair is not going to hold, we will tell you, even if it means a smaller job for us today.
How a Repair Job Comes Together
A good repair starts with figuring out what is actually wrong. Here is how we approach a typical job.
Assess the Damage
We walk the driveway with you, look at every crack and pothole, and check whether the base underneath is still solid. That decides whether a patch will hold or whether the section needs to come out.
Clean & Prep
We square up potholes, clean cracks, remove loose material, and dry the area. Skipping this step is why most cheap patches fail in a season.
Fill, Patch & Compact
Cracks get hot or cold crack filler depending on size. Potholes and damaged sections get hot-mix asphalt compacted to the right density so the patch stays put.
Finish & Cleanup
We smooth the edges, clean the site, and walk you through care — including when it is safe to drive on the repaired area and whether sealcoating makes sense afterward.
What We Can Fix
Most asphalt damage on residential driveways falls into a handful of categories, and most of it is repairable:
- Potholes. Square the edges, clean out the hole, and fill with compacted hot-mix. Done right, a patched pothole lasts years.
- Cracks. Hairline cracks get a thin crack filler; wider cracks get hot-pour rubberized filler. Filling cracks before water gets in is the single best way to prevent bigger damage.
- Crumbling edges and aprons. Driveway edges and the apron where the driveway meets the street take the most wear. We rebuild them with proper base and finish so they stop crumbling further.
- Sunken spots. If the base is still good, we mill the area down and patch over. If the base has failed under the spot, we cut it out, rebuild the base, and patch.
- Worn driveway-to-garage transitions. The strip where asphalt meets the garage slab is a common failure point. We rebuild it cleanly so it does not turn into a tripping hazard or a water entry.

Asphalt Repair Questions, Answered
Common questions we hear from homeowners with a cracked or potholed driveway.
How long does an asphalt patch last?
A properly done patch on a solid base typically lasts 5 to 10 years — sometimes longer with sealcoating maintenance. The lifespan drops fast if the base under the patch has failed, which is why we look at the base first.
How soon can I drive over a patched area?
Hot-mix asphalt patches are typically drivable within 24 hours. Crack filler usually needs a few hours to set before being driven over. Exact set times vary with ambient temperature, humidity, and how thick the application is.
Should I fix cracks now or wait?
Fix them now. Water getting into cracks, freezing, and expanding is what turns small cracks into big ones — and eventually into a failed driveway. Filling cracks early is one of the cheapest things you can do to extend a driveway's life.
Can you match the color of new patches to my existing driveway?
Fresh asphalt is darker than aged asphalt, so a patch will look noticeable for a while. The color difference fades over a few months as the new section oxidizes. If you want consistent color sooner, sealcoating the whole driveway after the repair work blends it out.
What is the best time of year for asphalt repair?
Late spring through early fall is ideal — the same temperature window that paving needs. Cold-pour crack fillers can work in cooler weather for smaller jobs, but anything involving hot-mix patches needs warmth to compact and bond properly.
