Stone, Brick & Hardscape Built to Last
Good masonry work outlasts everything else on a property. Stone walls, brick patios, walkways, and retaining walls do not just look good — when they are built properly, they hold up for decades through New England weather without much attention.
Evano Asphalt Services brings 15+ years of hands-on craft to every masonry job. We build for the long term — proper base prep, real drainage, and tight joints.
- Natural stone and brick walls
- Patios, walkways, and stone steps
- Retaining walls (stone or block)
- Driveway aprons and decorative borders
How a Masonry Project Comes Together
Masonry is one of those trades where you can see the prep work years later. Here is how we approach a typical job.
Design & Layout
We walk the site with you, talk through materials and look, and confirm placement. For larger jobs, we discuss drainage and how the work will tie into the rest of the property.
Excavation & Base
We dig out the footprint, install a compacted gravel base, and where the structure calls for it, set proper footings. The base is what keeps a wall straight and a patio level for the long haul.
Stone or Brick Set
We set the stone or brick to the layout, fitting pieces for tight joints. Walls get appropriate setback or batter. Retaining walls get drainage behind them.
Mortar, Finish & Cleanup
Joints are pointed or filled as the design calls for, the surface is cleaned, and we restore the surrounding area so you do not see where the crew was.
Materials We Work With
We work with natural stone (granite, fieldstone, bluestone) and brick for most of our masonry projects. For retaining walls, we use natural stone or segmental concrete block depending on what fits the property and the budget.
Underneath every job is the part nobody sees — a properly compacted base of gravel and stone dust. That base is what keeps a patio flat, a walkway level, and a wall plumb when the ground freezes and thaws every winter.
Why South Shore Homeowners Choose Us
Masonry is a craft. Plenty of people can stack stone — fewer can stack it so it stays stacked for 30 years. A few things that tend to matter:
- Real drainage. Retaining walls without drainage fail. We build in drainage from the start — gravel backfill, perforated pipe where needed, weep holes for stone walls.
- Proper base depth. A patio or walkway over thin base will heave with the first hard freeze. We do not cut corners on what is underneath.
- Tight, even work. Joints matter visually and structurally. We take the time to fit stones and set bricks in proper bond.
- Licensed and insured. Liability and workers' comp coverage on every job — your property and our crew are both protected.
Service Area
We take on masonry projects across the South Shore, most often in Milton, Quincy, Braintree, Weymouth, Randolph, Canton, Dedham, and Hingham. Call us to confirm availability in your town.
Masonry Questions, Answered
Common questions we hear from homeowners thinking about a new patio, walkway, or wall.
How long does a stone wall or brick patio last?
Properly built masonry typically lasts 30 to 50 years or more with very little maintenance. The variable is the base prep and drainage — those are what determine whether a wall stays straight or a patio stays flat over the decades.
What is the best time of year for masonry work?
Late spring through fall is ideal. Mortar needs temperatures above freezing to cure properly, and dry-stack work is much easier without snow and frozen ground in the way. We book early — reach out ahead of season if you have a target date.
Do I need permits for a retaining wall?
It depends on the height and your town. In Massachusetts, retaining walls above a certain height usually require a permit, and engineered drawings for taller structures. We will let you know during the estimate what your specific project will need.
What maintenance does masonry need?
Very little. Stone walls and brick patios mostly need occasional joint inspection, a quick clean of moss or staining if you want, and pointing repair every couple of decades. The bigger maintenance issues are usually drainage or settling problems caused by a poor build — which is why the base matters so much.
Can you match existing stone or brick on my house?
Often yes, especially for newer projects with standard materials. For older homes with hard-to-source brick or stone, we will work with you to find the closest match available. We will discuss material options at the estimate.
